Lake Bled

Bled is the classic: a castle on a cliff, a church on an island, and mountains behind the water. Most couples rent a holiday apartment or stay in a hotel close to the lake and get ready there. Two things matter for beauty. First, summer traffic – the lake is small, but in wedding season a short drive can take much longer than the map says, so leave an hour of buffer. Second, portraits: many couples go up to the castle terrace or to a lakeside terrace after the ceremony, where the light is strong and there is often wind. Ask for a hairstyle with secure hold and makeup that keeps shine under control, and wear shoes you can walk in.

Bohinj

Bohinj is the bigger, quieter lake inside Triglav National Park, further into the mountains than Bled. It suits couples who want nature and fewer crowds. The trade-off is distance: your artist drives further, so travel is a bigger part of the quote and early starts need planning. The air by the lake is humid, and mountain weather can turn quickly, so it's worth agreeing on a hairstyle that still looks good if humidity softens it – and a plan B for rain.

Ljubljana

A Ljubljana wedding often means a city hotel or apartment, a ceremony in or near the old town and portraits on the river or above the rooftops. Much of the center is pedestrian, so tell your artist exactly where to park and how to reach your door – there is a lot of equipment to carry. In July and August the city can be hot; air conditioning in the getting-ready room helps makeup set.

Brda

Brda is the wine region in the west, on the Italian border: rolling vineyard hills, stone villages and estate venues. Couples often get ready in a country house or at the estate itself. It's a longer drive from central Slovenia, so travel weighs more in the quote and the artist will plan the arrival time carefully. Vineyard ceremonies tend to be in open sun, which calls for well-set skin, a little extra shine control and blotting papers in the bag.

The coast

Slovenia's short Adriatic coastline has old seaside towns and hotels close to the water. Summer here is about heat, sea air and a breeze that plays with loose hair. Long-wear, well-set makeup and a hairstyle built with the wind in mind matter more than anywhere else. Ask your artist about parking in the old towns in high season.
